Abstract
The ultrasonic scanner has liq. crystal detectors spaced between polarising filters (2, 3) with the ultrasonic sources operating in transmission or reflection mode. The control circuit for the crystal detectors is simpler than conventional detectors. The layout has high spatial resolution and sensitivity, as well as a simplified optics. The detector does not have to be immersed in a water bath as is usual practice. Nematic rotary cells of liq. crystal (1) are inserted between the polarisation paths (2', 3') of a flat-type receiver. A sonic source (4, 5) is mechanically and acoustically coupled to the object (6) to be observed. The cells of excited by the reflected waves.
