Abstract

Panels comprise a series of strips of wood veneer where each strip is preformed into an arched profile so that when the veneer is stuck to a flat surface, e.g. wall, the centre of the panel is stressed in compression. The resulting panel is relatively resistant to subsequent distortion under the effect of varying moisture content of an integral paper based lining. The claims include panels with a complementary backing layer of agglomerated cork, of fibres or of (expanded) polystyrene. The wood veneers may be thinner and lighter than panels with planar unstressed veneers, esp. if the length/breadth ratio of individual panels >7:1.
