Abstract

Rock crusher has a roller cutter with an annular metal cutter with a tensile strength to resist impacts without permanent deformation, and a long shaft coaxial with the cutter and extending through it. The shaft is mounted in a housing which has an easily deformable elastomeric bushing whose outer periphery engages at least an inner periphery of the cutter and which extends radially inward from it. The bushing has a stiffness to deform in reaction to an impact force on the cutter such that the energy transfer to the housing is minimal, and a limited cross motion of the cutter w.r.t. the shaft's long axis is possible. The cutter can be rolled over the rock surface to break off pieces in continuous cuts; only a small fraction of the forces driving the cutting edges into the rock is transferred to the cutter tool mounting.
