Abstract

The roller (Z) is mounted above the lathe bed and rotated about its axis (15) away from the operator. A tool carrier is fitted onto the saddle of the lathe, this having a spindle (22) mounted in bearings and driven (23) by an electric motor (24) such that vibrations are not transmitted. The cutting tool (21) is either a milling head or a flycutter, with several roughing and finishing teeth and having the top of its curve of cutting action on the roller diameter (15). As the roller rotates, the cutting head also rotates and is traversed along its length, its direction of cutting being downwards.
