Abstract

An extrusion die head fitting, esp. for filament and tape mfr., allows a jet of fluid to be introduced between the surface of an extrudate and the die land faces which define the shape and dimensions of the extruded profile. The fitting can accept a preheated fluid and can be adjusted during extrusion to vary the amount of fluid introduced alongside the extrudate entering the die. Higher melt surface temp. reduces the melt drag and hence the tension necessary to draw the melt through the die. The velocity of the air jet can be throttled so that it does not sever the melt as the latter is heated.
