Abstract

A shaft is joined to at least one of the vehicle wheels and to the gearbox output. A device controls the engine and there is a clutch between it and the entry to the gearbox. A device can store energy or give it up and is typically of dynamic type. A clutch actuated by the brake control couples the shaft to the energy storage device to extract energy during braking. A second clutch connects the energy storage device to the shaft only during acceleration so as to help drive the vehicle.
