Abstract

The turbulence generator is made by helical twisting of a long narrow thin strip of material, and is fitted into a heat exchanger tube for improving heat transfer as a relatively simple and effective passive turbulence generator. The helix diameter is up to three percent smaller than the inside diameter of the enclosing tube. The ratio of the helix pitch and the diameter of the helix is between two and five. The strip thickness is about one to fifteen percent of the helix diameter. For approximately equal heat transfer performance, this helical strip causes an appreciably lower pressure drop than observed on using different internal fittings. The helix is not centered by additional components in the tube because the flow itself centers it correctly.
