Abstract
In an aluminium based master alloy contg. 0.2-0.8% B and sufficient Ti that Ti-2.2 B >=3.9%, its matrix comprises a preponderant proportion of grains 30 mu and it contains fine crystals of TiB2 (mean dia. 1 mu) dispersed mainly along the grain boundaries. The alloy is prepared in fine powder or shot form by (1) forming TiB2 by reacting liquid Al with TiO2 and B2 O3 in soln. in molten cryolite, (2) mixing the reactants to ensure complete consumption of the precursor materials, (3) quenching so as to produce very rapid solidification. Process prevents growth of TiB2 crystals without using expensive fluoro salts as precursors as in prior art.
