Abstract

Thixotropic emulsions with a high proportion of internal phase (>=80 vol. %) contain (a) a cosmetic, a medicament, a mixt. of a cosmetic and a medicament, a foodstuff or a 'household materila'; (b) an emulsifier; (c) an emulsifiable oil; and (d) a non-oil. Cosmetic uses include sun-screen creams, moisturising and cleansing creams, talc-based creams, baby oil emulsions, petrolatum creams, hair dressings and antiperspirant creams. Medicinal uses include acne creams, hydrocortisone creams and toothpastes. Foodstuff uses include whipped cream substitutes, ice-cream, etc. Household uses include cleaning materials, polishes, disinfectants, abrasives, soaps, detergents and bleaches. Unlike thixotropic gels, the emulsions with a high internal phase ratio (HIPR emulsions) return instantaneously to their high-viscosity state after having been subjected to shearing forces. They are capable of holding large amts. of solid particles in suspension in the internal phase, and are resistant to phase sepn. over long periods. They are capable of forming adherent, water-resistant, non-oily films on the skin and other surfaces.
