Abstract
In a vertical shell and tube heat exchanger heat is exchanged between two liquids one in the tube bundle and the second in the shell space up to a constant level beneath a volume of inert gas; there is an overflow facility from the second liquid level into an expansion chamber formed inside the tube bundle. Partic useful in minimising risks when the liquids are liable to explode if they come into contact by leakage, esp. water and liquid sodium when steam is generated by vaporising water with heat derived by liquid sodium from a fast nuclear reactor.
