Abstract

A fibrous web includes 55-95% by volume of thermoplastic matrix fibres or filaments having a melting point of at least 100 degrees C. (pref. 150 degrees-22 degrees C.) and 5-45% fine thermoplastic fibres having a melting point at least 25 degrees C. Higher (e.g. 180 degrees-260 degrees C.) than that of the matrix fibres. The web in then consolidated pref. under pressure and at a temperature higher than the melting point of the matrix fibres, pref. at a temperature between the two melting points. The matrix fibres may have a denier of 6-15 and a length of 40-80 mm. long, and pref. the web has a density of 25 gm./m2. The fibres may be polyolefins, polyamides, polyester. The fabric is strong and has improved touch characteristics.
