Abstract

Unsaturated cycloaliphatic ketones of formula: having 2 conjugated bonds in positions 1 and 3, 2 (exocyclic) and 3, or 2 (endocyclic) and 4, are prepared by (A) reducing the cyclic CO of an alkoxy carbonyl-4-isophorone of formula: and then dehydrating the carbinols formed, in the presence of an acid catalyst to obtain a cpd. possessing 2 conjugated double bonds in the position 1 and 3,2 (exocyclic) and 3, or 2 (endocyclic) and 4, or (B) treating, in an inert solvent, an alkyl -isoprepylidene-acetiacetate with a cpd. from the reaction of a phosphorus quaternary salt of formula CH2=CH-CH2-PR+X- in which R is alkyl or aryl, and X is halogen or gp. such as Clo4 or BF4, with a strong base to give conjugated double bonds in the 2 and 4 positions, or (C) isomerizing the cpd. from (B) by means of a basic isomerizing agent, pref. an alkaline metal alioholate, to obtain two non-conjugated double bonds in the 2 and 4 positions. The products are used as aromatizing agents for feedstuffs, in pharmaceutical preparation, and in perfume products.
