Abstract

Hardenable solid epoxy resin prepared by heating a mixture of a liquid polyepoxide, a catalyst and a polyhydroxyaromatic compound. The solid epoxy resin mixtures are stable up to 80 degrees C but may be hardened at higher temperatures. The liquid polyepoxides used are substantially the diglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A, and to get the best results, the hydrolysable chloride content should be less than 200 ppm. The catalysts are onium salts from the group: R4P+X-, R3S+X, R4As+X-, R3Se+X- and R3Te+X (in which R is an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl radical which may be substituted by halogen, nitro group or a grouping containing a keto group; X is Cl, Br or I). The polyhydroxy aromaticompound may have more than one OH on an aromatic ring or may be a molecule with more than one ring, such as bisphenol A. The proportion of catalyst used should be between 0.01% and 1%, preferably between 0.1% and 0.2%.
