Abstract

Mould feeding pipes for the conveyance of liquid steel from ladle to mould are subdivided horizontally into removable segments enabling the exercise of better control of the speed of pouring which usually relies on the weak of the refractory of the pipe causing an increase in its diameter to compensate for the reduction in pouring rate from the crucible due to loss of head of liquid metal in it. The mould are reinforced by metal sleeves or tyres round their circumference with grooves in the former to facilitate removal of the segments. Each segment has of a cylindrical inner bore portion and another of reduced diameter at the bottom being conical in shape and having a smaller diameter than the top of the next lower segment. The refractory employed should have maximum wear resistance. Segments can be removed by a suitable device during brief intervals during the pouring operation. The uppermost inlet segment along has a radiused top ensuring easy entry of the molten metal from the crucible.
