Abstract

Steel prodn. from scrap, pig iron and possible ore is carried out in a flame fired furnace such as an open hearth furnace by firstly heating the solid charge up to >1000 degrees C whence molten iron is sprayed into the furnace carried by a jet of fuel. The iron is added as a vertical jet to a jet of the fuel directed at the bath at an oblique angle. Pref. jet of oxygen is employed as carrier for the molten iron. The method results in much faster melting of the charge and permits a large increase in the proportion of scrap in the charge.
