Abstract

Coloured or colour-emitting materials are applied to the surface of a glass or ceramic article by imagewise exposing the surface which carries a solid light sensitive organic layer capable of developing an Rd of 0.2-2.2 to actinic radiation, placing free flowing particles of 0.3 mu diameter of the coloured or colour-emitting material on the organic layer, (thickness 25x the organic layer) embedding the particles in the form of a monolayer in the surface of the organic layer while the surface of the article has a temp below the m.p of the particles, to produce an image with regions varying in density in proportion to the exposure of each region removing non-imbedded particles heating to red heat to remove all the organic material from the surface of the article, and to bond the particles to the surface of the article, and, before or after heating, coating a second layer of the same or another light sensitive organic material capable of developing an Rd of 0.2-2.2 with a thickness of at least 0.1 mu, and repeating the previous stages.
