Abstract

A classifying appts. to separate e.g. sand into fine intermediate, and coarse fractions, has a settling tank in two adjacent pyramidal units sealed from the atmosphere, each of which is connected to a hydrocyclone separator. Slurry is fed at one end through a horizontally diffusing nozzle, below which supplementary water is introduced at a rate which may be varied by a valve. Supplementary water may also be introduced using the same pump at the outlets to the two hydrocyclones, and controlled by valve to vary fraction mix. The appts. is esp. applicable with suction dredged sand, and will handle up to 600 tons/hr. in a space 8m x 2.6 m. x 3.5 m.
