An identification card, credit card or a permit bearing the bearer's photograph 1, signature 2 and other information which may be embossed is made from a laminate comprising a support 3, Fig. 2, of polyvinyl chloride and upper and lower protective films 6, 7 made of transparent polyvinyl chloride and acetate copolymer, the photograph 1 and signature 2 being rendered tamper-proof by impregnating the support with an ink which comprises a solvent for the support and a dye which is soluble in the solvent. The identification card is made by covering one face of the support 3 with a photo-sensitive coating (4, Fig. 3) itself covered by a direct positive (5) prepared in advance and carrying the photograph and signature. Following exposure and removing the photo-sensitive layer which has not been affected by the light the support is inked to transfer the photograph and signature to the support by impregnation with the ink. Tamper-proofing is further enhanced by applying a distinctive graining to the protective film 6.
