Abstract

The invention relates to an apparatus 10 for draining fluids, for example, from a chest or pleural cavity, which includes a collection chamber 12 for collecting fluids. Also included is a waterless suction control chamber 16, which is in fluid communication with the collection chamber 12 for regulating the degree of vacuum imposed. If desired, a seal chamber 14 can also be provided between the dry suction control chamber and the collection chamber so as to prevent any ambient air from passing into the collection chamber. The apparatus consists of a large arm compartment 46 having a suction inlet at one end, and a small arm compartment 42 having an opening at the first end which communicates with said collection chamber 12 and communicates at its second end with the second end of said large arm 46. Furthermore, the first inlet of said small arm compartment 42 has means for preventing ambient air from passing into said collection chamber when said collection chamber 12 has a relatively high level of negative pressure. <IMAGE>
