Abstract

Transfusions and infusion fluids which are given to patients within the health care service must normally be heated before they can be given to patients. Conventional heaters need an external energy source, either electricity or hot water, to function, and because of this their sphere of application is primarily restricted to inside use, for example in a hospital or ambulance. A heater which utilizes the thermal energy generated by an exothermic reaction as its energy source may be used in places where an external energy source is not available, for example at accidents and in catastrophes and crisis areas. The transfusion and infusion heater consists of a box 1, a helical tube 2, a membrane 3, an elastic container 4 and a protective cover 5. The substances which bring about the exothermic reaction are inside the box 1 and the container 4 and are separated from each other by the membrane 3. When the heater is to be put into use, the protective cover 5 is removed, the elastic container 4 is pressed down until the membrane 3 splits and the substances which bring about the exothermic reaction are mixed together. The box is shaken so that the substances will mix together, after which the blood transfusion or infusion apparatus is connected to the inlet of the helical tube 2 and the outlet of the helical tube 2 is connected to the cannula and thus to the patient, and the heater is then ready for operation. <IMAGE>
