Abstract
A system 10 for cooling aircraft passenger cabins is located external to the aircraft and comprises a cooling unit 14, a heat exchanger 16 and a blower 18 which reduce the temperature of the air at outlet 22 to such a level that the air entering the aircraft inlet is below 35 DEG F. The air leaves the heat exchanger at 25 DEG F and, after passing through a flexible hose, enters the aircraft at 30 DEG F. The cooling unit includes a condenser 44 and a bypass valve 50 to enable de-icing of the heat exchanger. The cold air supplied to the aircraft has a low humidity and enables a reduced flow rate to be used compared with prior art systems.
