Abstract

In an ionization detector comprising inner 16, outer 14, and collector 18 electrodes a test electrode 26 is provided to which a voltage may be supplied. This voltage reduces the ion current in the device and hence lowers the voltage on the collector electrode 18 thus simulating the effect of the presence of smoke in the device. Alternative circuits for energising the test electrode are provided.
