A REATION ZONE IS SUPPLIED WITH A CATALYST CONSISTING OF ZINC OXIDES, CHROME AND AT LEAST ONE ALKALINE METAL, IN A RATIO BETWEEN ZINC AND CHROME OXIDES INCLUDED BETWEEN 5/1 AND 1/1, THE ALKALINE METAL BEING PREFERRED. POTASSIUM, WITH H2, CO AND EVENTUALLY CO2, AND INERT GASES IN A H2 / CO RATIO INCLUDED BETWEEN 0.1 AND 20, AT A TEMPERATURE INCLUDED BETWEEN 300 AND 500 C. AND AT A PRESSURE INCLUDED IN THE INTERVAL OF 2,000 AND 16,000 KPA, TO GIVE A PRODUCT THAT CONTAINS FROM 35 TO 75 PER 100 BY WEIGHT OF METHANOL ON AN HYDRAULIC BASE.
