Abstract
In a method of manufacturing can bodies 8 from sheet steel, in which the body is produced by drawing a sheet metal part pre-formed into a shell shape or by rolling a flat piece of sheet metal followed by welding together the abutting edges thus formed, one or both edge regions of the can body then being transformed into an edge flange or flanges (not shown), the improvement comprising the step of annealing the or each edge region in an annealing zone, the annealing being effected in the presence of a protective gas atmosphere. An apparatus suitable for carrying out such a method comprising a fixed induction loop 10 comprising two parallel spaced-apart arcuate sections 11, 12 which define an annealing zone, the arcuate sections being located with clearance from conveyor means 1 for carrying the can bodies 8, the conveyor means including means for retaining each can body 8 and means for rotating each can body about its own axis at an adjustable speed, said conveyor means, in use, carrying said can bodies sequentially in a continuous or stepwise manner into the annealing zone, and means for providing a protective gas atmosphere in the annealing zone.
