Process for preparing titanium dioxide of controlled particle size, characterized in that it comprises the steps of: (a) heating an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid containing up to 200 grams of titanium dioxide per liter of solution, until the degree of hydrolysis is about 10 to 20%, to form filterable precipitate particles; (b) filtering said solution to separate said particles of titanium dioxide, obtaining an almost clear filtrate; (c) further hydrolysing said filtrate and slowly adding 6-8 parts by volume of the original aqueous acidic solution of titanium dioxide per one part of filtrate; and (d) recovering a hydrolyzed precipitate that can be calcined to give titanium dioxide having a color index of 1,500 or greater.
