Abstract

A tool carrier turret for a lathe has a displaceable screw drive (3, 7) for a tool carrying body (8) with the driven nut member (7) of the screw drive being engageable in either end positions of displacement with fixed base (1) via interengaging members (9, 10) or with a portion (12) of the screw (3) via interengaging members (12, 13). Selective positioning of the tool carrying body is permitted by a drive motor (17, 18) mounted on a central column (16) which, via epicyclic reducing gearing (21-27) and appropriate direction control means, effects desired rotation of the screw member (3) for tool carrying body indexing displacement by engagement with a detent ring 28 coupled to a ring gear (27). The detents are selectively engageable in a fixed ring (29) or recessed portions of the screw (3)-latching members (14, 15) also being provided to prevent accidental rotation of the tool carrying body (8) out of a desired station during displacements.
