Abstract
The purification of a matte containing at least 10% copper by removal of one or more of the impurities lead, arsenic, bismuth, zinc, antimony and cadmium which comprises chloridizing a molten bath of the matte at a temperature of at least 800 DEG C with copper chloride, nickel chloride or chlorine gas or mixtures thereof to provide sufficient chlorine to combine stoichiometrically with the impurities to be removed, discontinuing chloridization and thereafter purging the bath with a gas stream containing inert gas for at least 10 minutes.
