Abstract

A continuous process and plant for agglomerating solids, partic. of colloidal dimension, from suspension in a liq. to facilitate sepn. and purificn. of the liq. is claimed. The liq. flows continuously between two electrodes operating on A.C. at 0.2 to 800 HZ and with a current density of 1.24 to 93.0 amps/dm2, while the liquid is agitated to a turbulence equivalent to a Reynolds number of about 10,000. The turbulence is created by injection of a fluid, e.g. compressed air and/or recirculated liq. and is used to promote between the electrodes a fluidised bed of electrically conductive particles, e.g. cylindrical pellets of graphite with a nominal dia. of 3.2mm x 4.8 mm long. Used e.g. sepg. colloidal graphite pollution from aqueous suspension and treating sedimentation sludge from paper mill effluent., enhanced flocculation of solids and extended periods of trouble-free operation are obtd. erosion of electrodes is reduced to only 0.2% of that in D.C, cells. Treated water is clarified and deodorised by the hydroden peroxide. The electrodes are kept clean by scrubbing action of particles in the fluidised bed.
