Abstract
A method for the rapid disinfection of a water supply that is contaminated with microorganisms and to be consumed in the form of potable carbonic water or as a carbonic beverage formed by mixing said carbonic water with a beverage syrup, comprising the steps of reducing the pH of the contaminated water to a value less than 6.0 but greater than 4.0, without the addition of a mineral or organic acid, by the introduction of gaseous carbon dioxide into the contaminated water and, at substantially the same time, by injection of a sufficient amount of liquid halogen-based disinfectant into the contaminated water to achieve complete elimination of non-cyst-forming pathogens and substantial reduction of non-pathogens.
