Abstract
A process for preparing high impact resistance polystyrene polyblends comprising the steps of: (a) dissolving a graft rubbery polymer in a polymerizable monomer formulation comprising at least one aromatic monovinylidene monomer to form a polymerizable mixture, (b) mass polymerizing with agitation said mixture until obtaining a partially polymerized mixture having a grafted, inverted and dispersed rubber phase, (c) suspending said partially polymerized mixture in an inert liquid, (d) suspending polymerizing said mixture partially polymerized to higher conversions and (e) recovering the suspension polyblend from said suspension, characterized in that a peroxide catalyst is used which has a half-life of less than one hour at a temperature of 130ºC and a half-life of 10 hours at a temperature of approximately 95ºC to 115ºC in steps (b) and (d), effec step (d) being taken at a temperature of 95ºC to 125ºC, said polymerizable mixture being polymerized to a conversion of approximately 10 to 45% and step (d) being carried out at a temperature of 110ºC to 150ºC, said partially polymerized mixture being polymerized to essentially the complete conversion, said grafted rubber having a weight average particle size of from 0.1 to 7.0 microns and a swelling index of 9 to 25 and said rubber comprising from 2 to 20% by weight of said polymerization formulation.
