Abstract
A process for the manufacture of catalytic compositions with a perovskite crystal structure and formula ABO3, where type A cationic centers are practically completely occupied by ions of a metal with an atomic number of 11 to 51, 56 to 71 or 89 to 103; a part of the type B cation centers are occupied by ions of at least one metal from the platinum group selected from ruthenium, osmium, rhodium, iridium, palladium and platinum and the rest of the type B cation centers are occupied by ions of at least one metal not belonging to the platinum group with an ionic radius between 0.4 and 1.4 Angstroms; where mixtures of metal oxides, metal hydroxides, metals and/or reacting metal salts that are converted into oxides by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere are heated for sufficient times to temperatures that allow the spontaneous formation of the compounds; whose procedure is characterized in that the reactants are selected so that type B centers have one of the following characteristics: (A) At least 5% of the non-platinum type B centers are occupied by metal ions of variable valence in a first valence and at least 5% of the non-platinum type B centers are occupied by ions of the same metal of variable valence in a second valence; (B) Virtually all of the non-platinum metals from type B centers are present at a single valency and a majority portion of the non-platinum metals from type B centers are present at a valence of 3; and with the proviso that when the type A cation is barium and the platinum group metal is platinum, no more than 80% of the type B cation centers are occupied by titanium.
