Abstract
A process for the preparation of a pharmaceutical product based on dihydroquinoline-aldehyde, endowed with antioxidant activity, characterized in that 2,2,4-trimethyl-l, 2-dihydroquinoline, or a derivative thereof containing a a further but unsubstituted 6-methyl group, or an acid addition salt of these compounds, with 0.5 to 1.0 molar equivalents of an aldehyde of the general formula R-CHO wherein R represents hydrogen or a lower alcohol group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst, preferably an acid or acid metal halide, at temperatures between room temperature and boiling point of the reaction mixture, obtaining a condensation product of dihydroquinoline-aldehyde of the general formula/I / **(See formula)** where R has the same meaning as defined above, represents hydrogen or a methyl group which may be attached to the ring system at any of the free positions except for the 6 position, and n is 1, 2 or 3, and then, if If desired, the unreacted starting compound is separated from the reaction mixture, and/or the product is purified by recrystallization and, if desired, the product obtained is converted into a base into its acid addition salts, or the product obtained is converted in the form of a salt in the free base, and finally the condensation product of formula/I/obtained, or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, alone or together with vehicles is converted and/or auxiliary substances usable in the pharmaceutical industry, in pharmaceutical products for oral or parenteral administration, preferably in tablets, dragees, aqueous or oily solutions or suspensions, or in other pharmaceutical products known.
