A procedure for obtaining 1,1,2-trichloroethane by reacting chlorine with liquid 1,2-dichloroethane in the presence of a peroxide, characterized in that 1,2-dichloroethane is reacted with chlorine, at boiling, in one or several consecutive reactors provided, each with a peroxide feed and a chlorine inlet in the presence of one or more peroxides chosen from propionyl, isobutyryl, capryloyl, 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl peroxides, decanoyl, lauroyl, and 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl, isopropyl and cyclohexyl percarbonates, and tert-butyl perpivalate.
