Procedure for the preparation of new 1- (meta-acyloxyphenyl) -1-hydroxy-2-N-alcoholyl-ethanes of the general formula ** (See formula) ** wherein R1 signifies an alcohol radical with 3 to 19 carbon atoms and R2 signifies methyl or ethyl, in the form of racemates or pure optically active forms, as well as the corresponding acid addition salts, characterized in that it is reduced an acetophenone of the formula ** (See formula) ** wherein R1 and R2 are as defined above and R3 signifies hydrogen or an optionally substituted benzyl radical, an N-benzyl radical optionally contained in the product of the reduction is removed, racemates of formula I are cleaved, if desired, in the optical antipodes and/or acid addition salts obtained in the first term are transformed into free bases or salts of other acids, or in the first place bases are transformed into desired acid addition salts.
