An improved exchange amination procedure for the preparation of 2-hydrazinobenzothiazoles of the formula: **(See formula)** where each group R independently represents hydrogen, halogen, C1-C3 lower alkyl, C1-C3 lower alkoxy or C1-C3 lower alkylthio and n is 0, 1 or 2; whose procedure is characterized by reacting the corresponding 2-aminobenzothiazole compound of the formula: **(See formula)** where each R1 independently represents hydrogen or methyl, with hydrazine in the presence of at least a catalytic amount of an acid.
