Abstract

Method of applying a colored surface layer on a sintered carbide body containing at least one carbide in addition to binder metal, characterized in that a thin titanium carbide surface layer is applied to the carbide body by deposition from a gaseous phase containing hydrogen, titanium halide and a carbon-containing gas, after which the carbon-containing gas is wholly or partially replaced by a nitrogen-containing gas in the last stage of the deposition process, preferably during the last 5 to 60% of the coating time, thereby changing the surface layer being deposited from titanium carbide to titanium nitride or titanium carbonitride.
