Abstract
Improvements introduced in the method of forming heat-softened glass sheets by bending under pressure, in which a succession of heat-softened glass sheets is transported along a predetermined path and are moved continuously between a pair of groups of glass. Forming rollers that can be rotated about geometric axes transverse to said path, each group comprising a plurality of shaped rotating rollers having curved contour forming surfaces in their axial direction, each roller corresponding in one of said groups to a roller of said other group, said corresponding rollers having complementary shaping surfaces, said groups being able to move relatively between a retracted position and a position in which they sandwich the glass sheet, wherein said shaping members communicate their shape on said softened glass sheets by heat, whose improvements buy den: (a) continuously moving each of said glass sheets to position between said groups of forming rollers while said groups are retracted and said rollers are rotating, (b) bringing said groups of forming rollers to the application position to the glass sheet, momentarily, so that each pair of facing rollers is applied, simultaneously, to a longitudinally spaced longitudinally moving part of other moving parts of said glass sheet in contact with other said pairs of rollers, facing only during the sufficient time for each pair of facing rollers to contact only a minor part of the length of said glass sheet, until said longitudinal increments develop different localized parts of the desired shape without interrupting the advancing movement of said glass sheet between said rotating rollers; and (c) retracting at least one of said groups.
