Abstract

Document sorting apparatus, comprising: a respective transport device having a document path, a plurality of trays for storing documents including an overflow tray, each tray having an inlet located along the document path and a deflector element associated therewith and adapted when activated to direct said documents from said transport device to. inside the tray, a programming organ to drive individual elements of the respective deflectors and direct said documents into a selected tray of a module chosen in a predetermined sequence, characterized by sensor organs to perceive the presence and absence of a document in places predetermined along said corresponding path and providing relative presence and absence indicating signals, and a circuit coupled to said transport device that includes a synchronization member sensitive to said signals coming from different places and that provides an input signal to control the transport device whereby, when there is a longer period of time between said signals from different places than the one determined in advance, the transport of documents to each of the module trays stops and the entry of documents is pour into the tray mentioned overflow.
