Abstract
There is introduced into a ferrous melt, using carrier gas containing free or bound oxygen but not more than 45% of oxygen by volume, the oxide of metal desired in the product, at a rate and quantity such that a rapid carbon boil is produced but that the production of brown fume is substantially inhibited. The process may be applied to carbon steel, when iron oxide, possibly in the form of millscale, ore or dust from a fume-cleaning plant, is introduced, or may be applied to alloy steels when one or more oxides of iron, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, cobalt or tungsten may be added in either case a part of the iron oxide may be introduced into the slag bath. Oxide injection may be stopped when the desired carbon content is reached, or may be continued until other impurities have been eliminated followed by recrystallization. A preferred gas is compressed air, but carbon dioxide may also be used.
