Abstract

Fluorine is recovered from waste carbonaceous material, in the form of gaseous HF, by pyrohydrolysis in the presence of steam and air, the process being carried out continuously in a fluidized bed reactor to which solid carbonaceous material crushed to granular form is continuously added, the fluidizing gases being a mixture of air and steam. The preferred temperature is above 1100 C., and the fluidizing gases may be preheated in a heat exchanger. The heat demand comes either entirely from the combustion of the carbonaceous material or partly also from added fuel. The grain size is preferably below 10 mm. and the fluorine may be recovered from the off gas by washing with water or aqueous alkali. Disclosed is the recovery of fluorine from pot linings and pot rakings, scum and cyclone dust derived from the melt electrolytic production of aluminium. The fluorine recovered may be converted into cryolite and returned to the electrolysis.
