Abstract

A percussive tool, e.g. a rock drill, comprises an anvil 12 in contact with an annular damping member 13 such that on the downward stroke of the anvil to strike a tool bit 22, air in a chamber 14 between the anvil 12 and damping member 13 is compressed to urge the anvil 12 upwards. On the upward stroke, a flange 15 on the anvil 12 contacts a rim 16 of the damping member 13 and this member 13 is of such a mass that it absorbs all the kinetic energy of the anvil 12 which is consequently stopped. The drill may be operated by an I.C. engine having a piston 3 connected to a crank-shaft 6 to which a driving piston 8 is similarly connected. Air is drawn into the compression chamber 11 between the driving piston 8 and anvil 12 through a port 10 and may be expelled through passages 23, 24 and 29 to the flushing duct 25 of the drill bit 22. The damping member rests on a shoulder 18 until it is lifted by the anvil 12, and the distance "a" between the driving piston 8 and the anvil 12 may be chosen for optimum efficiency.
