Abstract
Articles, such as glass sheets, are supported, at least partially, by gas jets which discharge upwardly towards the articles from orifices which are displaced horizontally or with a horizontal component of motion. In the embodiment shown in plan view in Fig. 1, the upper run of an endless belt having transverse rows of slots 12 passes over the upper face of a plenum chamber 1 which is formed with longitudinal slots 7. In operation, the article is supported by gas jets passing through the orifices 14 formed by the intersection of slots 7, 12, the orifices moving at the same speed as the upper run of the belt. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the endless belt is mounted within the plenum chamber, with the upper run of the belt adjacent the top wall of the chamber. For handling curved sheets, the top of the chamber is of arcuate cross-section and the belt rollers have curved generatrices. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, the sheet 43 is supported partially by rollers 25 and partially by gas issuing from radial apertures 29 in hollow rollers 26 connected to a plenum chamber. In operation, the rollers 26 are rotated in the direction 42 corresponding to the required direction of movement 44 of the sheet 43. The driving effect of the gas jets can be modified by moving rollers in which the apertures are inclined to the radii or by deflecting the jets on one side of the rollers by vanes 109, or by masking the apertures on one side by screens 110. The sides of the sheet may be guided by edge rollers or belts (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), additional blowing rollers are provided above the sheet. The apertures in the rollers may be arranged in one or more helical series around the roller axis, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown). For handling curved sheets, the lower rollers are barrel-shaped and the upper rollers are formed with a corresponding concave profile, Figs. 12-14 (not shown).
