Abstract
Cans are exchanged in a sliver coiler by an empty can being moved onto the rotary turntable thereof and thereby pushing the filled can clear of the turntable, with the empty can then being moved into the coiling position on the turntable. A piston rod is provided with two pusher arms which engage reinforced rims at the base of two empty cans to push one can onto the turntable and to push the second can from the second reserve position into the first reserve position. The arms are pivotally mounted on the rod so as to be able to pivot beneath the cans on retraction of the rod and on supply of further cans to the reserve positions. Guides define a trackway for the cans from the second reserve position to the exit side of the coiler. The empty can is moved into the actual coiling position by a plunger, which has a conically tapering head, moving upwardly through the supporting shaft of the turntable into an aperture in the base of the can. The full cans are pushed from the turntable on to a trolley having its casters positioned down ramps so that the platform of the trolley is at floor level. A pneumatically controlled ram is provided to push the loaded trolley up the ramps. The coiler is stopped, the plunger is lowered beneath the turntable, and the piston rod is actuated when a measured length of sliver has been coiled, while switches are provided to prevent the piston rod operating if cans in the reserve positions are not properly positioned as determined by spring-pressed roller arms, or if there is no can in the first reserve position.
