Abstract

A cyclone separator for removing foreign particles from a fluid suspension of solid particles comprises a conical chamber having a porous wall 20, a tangential inlet 10 for introducing the suspension to be cleaned in a chamber at the top of the conical chamber so that it passes in a vortical whirl through the conical chamber, a central outlet 40 for the cleaned suspension, a jacket enclosing the porous wall 20 and connected to a valved supply pipe 60 whereby liquid is forced through the wall 20 to form a layer on the inside surface of the wall, and a tip portion 30 having a non-porous wall and provided with a discharge opening for separated foreign particles. The inside diameter of the large end of the tip portion 30 is greater than that of the small end of the chamber to facilitate discharge of the foreign particles. The separator may be used to remove unwanted particles from wood pulp stock. The liquid forced through the wall 20 may be water and serves to release any light acceptable particles that may become entrapped with the unacceptable heavy particles on the wall of the chamber and cause them to discharge through the outlet 40. The layer of water formed on the wall also serves to protect the wall and to decrease frictional resistance thereby also facilitating the downward discharge of separated foreign partides. The separator may also be used for separating foreign particles from a gaseous suspension of solids. In this case the liquid layer on the wall serves to trap the separated particles and discharge them through the apex of the separating chamber. The liquid may also function as cooling and wear reducing agent when treating hot gases.
