Abstract

An air filter for an I.C. engine intake comprises an annular pleated paper element 3 in a two-part housing 1, 2 of injection-moulded polypropylene, having an outlet 8 and an inlet tube 23 secured to annular inlet boss 12 in part 1 by a snap-action fastening. In Fig. 1, tube 23 is polypropylene and has a peripheral ridge 25 and a flange 26 which respectively snap into annular groove 24 and abut the end of inlet boss 12 when tube 23 is pushed into boss 12. Figs. 2 to 5 (not shown) illustrate steel inlet tubes. In Fig. 2, two semi-annular polypropylene mouldings are fitted on to the tube end, by their lugs (30) engaging holes (31), to form a collar (29) which is then pushed into and engages inlet boss (28) as in Fig. 1. In Figs. 3, 4 the tube is in two parts secured along longitudinal flanges and has an outwardly turned end lip which snaps into a recess in the inlet boss directly or is retained therein by a snap action ring (43) inserted from within the housing. In Fig. 5 a peripheral ridge (45) on tube (44) abuts the end of the boss and a snap action external clamping ring (49) holds it in place. The two parts of the housing may be secured by snap action, inturned lip 19 of lid 2 engaging recess 18 of body 1 when pushed over tapering rim 13. The housing is secured to a carburetter by a stud 20 and wing-nut 21, which may constitute additional or sole means of securing parts 1, 2 together. The inlet tube acts as a silencer.
