Abstract
A merry-go-round comprises a vertical shaft 4 with a spiral groove 5 engaging projections from a sleeve 32 supporting passenger cars 10, which sleeve 32 is turned around said shaft by the passengers to lift the cars, and means in the form of a keyway 6 to guide said sleeve in a rectilineal path. The said sleeve projections comprise steel balls 40 which roll both in an internal groove 38 of the sleeve 32 and in the spiral groove 5 as the sleeve is rotated around the shaft 4 through worm gearing 31, 32 by passengers rotating cranks 13 while seated in the cars. The carriage 12 is thus raised and at the same time is prevented from rotation about the shaft by means of a member 44 which engages a keyway 6 in the shaft 4. When the carriage reaches the top of the shaft the member 44 is withdrawn by a passenger so that the carriage with the cars theron is free to roll down the spiral course of the groove 5. When the carriage reaches the stepped down portion 49 of the shaft the cars spin freely around on wheels 11 and ball bearing 46.
