Abstract

A cooling tower of hyperboloid shape is constructed by erecting above the usual grillwork base 2 of the tower a network of tensioned, spaced-apart cables 10 in two groups in which the cables cross one another, the cables being anchored at their lower ends in a ring beam 8 and at their upper ends in a tensioning device (Fig. 5, not shown), which enables the tension to be maintained and adjusted whilst the network is being embedded in a layer of a cement-like material (e.g. a cement-sand-water mix). In the form shown, vertically spaced, horizontally extending rings 28 embrace the network and are secured thereto by wires 29 (Fig. 3, not shown). The cement-like material may be applied either by blowing it through the network against a former erected inside the network, or by pouring it into shuttering erected inside and outside the network. When the cement covering reaches a point near the top of the tower the cables 10 are disconnected from the tensioning device and are bent over so that a lip may be formed (Fig. 7, not shown). The lip may extend internally and/or externally of the tower.
