Abstract
A process of polymerizing butadiene to produce a polymer in which at least 80% of the butadiene units are in the cis-1,4 configuration, which comprises polymerizing butadiene in the presence of a catalyst formed by mixing a catalytically inactive first component and a second component, said first component being formed by the interaction of (a) a titanium halide having the formula tixn rn, wherein x is chlorine or bromine, r is chlorine, bromine, or an organic radical, m has a value of 0 or 1 and n is equal to 4-m, (b) an organometallic reducing compound, in which a carbon atom of at least one hydrocarbon radical is attached to a metal of group 1a, 2 or 3a of the system periodic, and (c) iodine, said second component comprising a hydrocarbon lithium being between 1.3: 1 and 3.5: 1, on a molar basis, the ratio of said second component to the titanium halide.
