Abstract
A process for the preparation of an ammonium or alkali metal alkylaryl sulfonate of low inorganic salt content in which the sulphonic acid-containing reaction mixture, obtained by the sulfonation of an alkylaryl compound, is neutralized with a stoichiometric excess of an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide, characterized in that the aqueous solution of the alkali metal hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide has a concentration comprised between 5% and 15% by weight, and that the stoichiometric excess is an amount in excess of, at least 5% by weight relative to the amount required to neutralize just the sulfonic acid plus any sulfonating agent that may be present in the reaction mixture resulting from the sulfonation of the alkylaryl compound, and that, after neutralization, that the temperature of the mixture is below 70ºC, separating then the sulfon ammonium abate or the alkali metal sulfonate of the aqueous layer.
