Process for the preparation of esters of benzenedicarboxylic acids by common catalytic oxidation of xylenes or mixtures of their isomers and of the esters of the toluic acids formed therefrom by oxidation, in the liquid phase, the proportion of the esters of toluic acids being greater than the proportion of xylenes, with oxygen or with gases containing oxygen, in the presence of oxidation catalysts, optionally at elevated pressure and at elevated temperature, adequately carrying out the oxidation so that, in essence, so much toluic acid is formed by oxidation of the corresponding xylene as the toluic acid ester is oxidized to benzenedicarboxylic acid monoester, subsequent esterification of the xylene mixture, separation of the benzenedicarboxylic acid esters and further oxidation of the toluic acid esters together with xylenes according to the patent 1,041,945, characterized in that as xylenes are used p-xylene or m-xylene of 98.5 to 100%.
